WNDX is proud to be supporting this new 16 mm installation incubator workshop at the Winnipeg Film Group:

CELLULOID AND PUBLIC SPACE:

16 MM FILM INSTALLATION INCUBATOR WORKSHOP

June 1 to June 22, 2013 – with Saturday class sessions

Learn more or to register for this workshop on the WFG’s website here.

Spectators in cinema are protected, both from the mechanisms of cinema’s production through the artifice of film and from elements that would disrupt its reception through the architecture of the theatre. Consequently, although the physical experience of viewing a film is a collective one, the space of the theatre promised a private, anonymous viewing experience.

This installation incubator workshop explores the intersection of experimental cinema, public space and installation. Combining a theory and hands-on handmade filmmaking, participants will work on individual, 100 ft silent films that thematically consider the engagement of film, space and place. Participants will receive feedback from the instructors and other participants during this workshop, and should be open to having their works critiqued.

The completed collective student project will then be presented to the public in a looped, outdoor pop-up exhibit during the WNDX festival at the end of September.

INSTRUCTORS: Solomon Nagler and Lawrence Bird

MAXIMUM PARTICIPANTS: 8

WORKSHOP FEE: $179 for members / $209 for non members (plus tax)

WORKSHOP FEE INCLUDES:
• 2 x 100 ft of 3378 16 mm stock (B/W, high contrast, orthochromatic)
• Use of Bolex camera and accessories for two days
• Access to hand processing facilities
• Access to tinting and toning resources
• Access to Steenbeck for hand editing
• Inclusion in final public group workshop exhibit during the WNDX festival

WORKSHOP LOCATION: Winnipeg Film Group Production Centre

Films by Cecilia Araneda; Alex Rogalski; Solomon Nagler; Irene Bindi; Divya Mehra; Jenny Bisch and Jaimz Asmundson

Established in 2005, Winnipeg’s WNDX collective sought to respond to a void within the prairie region by initiating a film festival (WNDX Festival of Moving Image) focused on innovative, experimental and avant-garde works. Winnipeg has a rich history of being a hotbed of creation in these forms, but up until that point there had been no dedicated presenter locally for this cinema. This collective makes room for cinema in all of its incarnations, including film, video, single and multi channel presentation platforms, and expanded forms.

The works in the first program, New Prairie Cinema, include a sampling of prairie cinema featured in its festival over the past six years. The second program, WNDX Collective, features works of past and current WNDX collective members.

Cecilia Araneda (Executive Director, Winnipeg Film Group / Co-founder, WNDX Collective) and other filmmakers in attendance

For more info: www.cinematheque.qc.ca/en/programmation/projections/cycle/double-negative-presents-new-prairie-cinema-wndx-collective

WNDX pays special attention to the most innovative and ground-breaking works created by moving image artists. In the past, WNDX has featured spotlights on Guy Maddin, Joyce Wieland, George Kuchar, Steve Reinke, Barbara Sternberg, Phil Hoffman and John Price, a well as the work of the Loop Collective. Our website’s archives section provides an overview of how we program the festival.
